Born from Resilience,
Rooted in Culture
Isintu African Accessories was born from a journey of resilience, courage, and hope. After losing her job in 2014 and facing financial hardship, founder Busi Mahali decided to create a new path for herself. In September 2015, while working a low-paying contract job, she took a leap of faith — approaching local artisan Leana Potgieter, who trusted her enough to provide wooden beaded accessories on R3,000 credit. That small act of kindness became the foundation of Isintu African Accessories.
Based in Langa Township, Cape Town's oldest township, Isintu is a 100% Black woman-owned business celebrating African heritage through handmade South African beadwork and cultural craft products. The business works closely with skilled women artisans from local communities — helping them earn an income and support their families while preserving traditional beadwork skills for future generations.
In 2021, Busi made the bold decision to leave her job and focus fully on growing the business. By 2023 she had learned to make her own beads and was contracted by the City of Cape Town to lead community empowerment beautification projects in Langa, Maitland, Kensington, and Factreton.
"Isintu" means culture. Every piece I make carries the spirit of my people.
